PROFESSOR MAURICE EFANA ASUQUO

Maurice Efana Asuquo was born into Etinyin Efanga Ofiong Royal House, Henshaw Town, in Calabar South/ Akpabuyo Local Government areas of Cross River State of Nigeria and Mbarakom, Creek Town in Odukpani Local Government area. He is married with children to Dr (Mrs) Inyang Maurice Asuquo, PhD, Lecturer in the Department of Science Education, University of Calabar, Calabar.

He attended Salvation Army Primary School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State of Nigeria and there after proceeded to Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt. However, he had to transfer to Saint Patricks College, Ikot Ansa, Calabar, with the onset of the Nigerian civil war. Later he had his post secondary education in the College of Technology, Calabar where he obtained advanced level certificate in Basic Studies of the University of Cambridge. In 1981, he graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan with MBBS degree.

Prof Maurice Asuquo was enlisted in the National Youth Service Corps (1982/83) where he was posted to serve in Zaria, Kaduna State, after successful completion of his houseman ship training in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar in 1981/82.

He had his residency training programme in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar and obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in General Surgery. He was appointed Lecturer 1 in Surgery in the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Calabar, and Consultant Surgeon in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, in 2001. In the year 2005, he was conferred with an honorary award of the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons (FICS).

Publications

Professor Maurice Asuquo has 90 scholarly publications (58 foreign, 32 local) spread in 23 foreign and 14 local journals. He has authored two chapters in Basic Principles of Emergency Management of Acute Trauma namely Emergency Management of Abdominal Injuries and Emergency Management of Burns.

His major areas of interest are in Dermatological oncology (Organising Committee Member, Clinical dermatology conferences in San Antonio, New Orleans and Chicago, USA with University of Calabar as event partners).Member Trauma Research Group (Interest in Abdominal and Burns Trauma), gastroenterology and coloproctology. Attended several conferences/workshops including over 23 international conferences in United States of America, United Kingdom, Asia, and Africa and presented over 22 papers in both local and international conferences.

He is a member of the editorial board of seven international journals and journal reviewer in 8 international and 4 local journals.

Extracurricular activities include football, reading, and travelling.
